The Peace Corps today has 7,749 Volunteers serving in 73 countries. Three-fifths of the Volunteers are female; 1,240 are people of color; and 465 are older than 50. The oldest Volunteer today is 81.

Poverty, injustice, oppression, suffering, these remain the basic conditions of life on most of the planet- whatever else has changed since [Che Guevara’s] death, this hasn’t, but as life becomes more pleasurable and affluent for the rest of us, the poor seem more remote than ever, their appeal to our humanity even fainter.
